The NEPA Process

What is NEPA?

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)  was enacted to ensure that information on the identification and analysis of potential environmental impacts of any federal, or federally funded, action is available to public officials and citizens before decisions are made and before actions are taken.

Why Does NEPA Apply Here?

Under the Compact of Free Association—an agreement between the United States and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM)—the U.S. must follow NEPA and related environmental laws when undertaking projects in FSM territory.

What This Means for Yap: The U.S. government will review how proposed projects might affect:

The sea- read here

Cultural resources and heritage sites- read here

Any negative impacts must be identified, studied, and either avoided or reduced before projects can proceed. Read more about the NEPA process below

Where is Yap in this process?

The Airport & Port Expansion project is currently accepting public comments on this proposal. There are two public comment sections; one closed August 8th. A second beginning September 8th.
